#aaaauuuuuugh CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT #the first thing we see him do is hold that locket between his fingers #and one of the last things he does in the finale is to drop it on the ground and walk away #another man - a lesser man maybe - would have recovered long ago #he brought a criminal to justice #and i honestly believe he did what he did because he felt like it was the only thing he could do #but in his heart he’s always kept wondering #looking back #thinking where /he/ went wrong #what he could have done different #never letting go of his guilt because what kind of man would he be if he forgave himself #then she’s kneeling in front of him #is he doing this because it’s his duty? because he’s the one who made her this way? #he thought that killing her for good would fix - what? - something #but then he realizes he’s wrong #he thought he’d killed her once before and it nearly destroyed him #so he decides to move forward instead of going back #he has learned and he has grown and he chooses mercy this time #he chooses to have mercy on her and in doing so he chooses to have mercy on himself for the first time in five years #he chooses to take the first step on the path to healing #with his family watching #the family he’s not only willing to die for - he’s willing to live for them as well (via tomburke)
